Are Sports Betting Sites Legal?

Judging by our domain name, the legal angle of a sports betting website is certainly at the core of what we want to cover. If you have browsed our site already, you might have come across individual pages for specific betting sites. With that, you might have further inferred that there are legal sites out there in which U.S. bettors can wager legally for real money. But this is the page where we talk specifically about that - what makes a sports betting website legal.

Before we get any further, let's get right to the heart of the question here surrounding the legality of online sportsbooks. To further complicate things (for the minute), the answer to this question is both yes and no.

As a sports bettor, you have a great deal of options to visit legal sports sites and place real money on bets to win. But there are federal laws that state that prohibit sports betting sites from operating in the U.S.

The law that dictates this is the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act - implemented back in 2006. The UIGEA is critical from both standpoints in what a bettor in the U.S. can and can't do. Fortunately from the perspective of the individual, the news is better than from the perspective of the online betting site/business. Individual bettors are expressly left out of the language of the UIGEA, as the law's focus is on the business operating a betting site. The UIGEA takes away the ability for a business to knowingly accept payments for a bet that is made.

With bettors still able to legally place an online bet, all they need is a place to do it. This is where legal offshore sports betting websites come into play, allowing for Americans to have a safe place to bet on sports that they love.

Legal sports betting websites remain very limited in the U.S. on land. In terms of land-based sportsbooks there are just two states in which bettors are able to place legal wagers. They are in Nevada and Delaware. Of the two, there are many more options in Nevada than in Delaware - where only NFL parlay bets can be made.

This leaves the majority of the United States looking for other places to bet. Much of this is conducted with legal online sportsbooks allowing American players.

The federal government seems to be content with what the laws they enacted are doing. They are aware that the UIGEA still allows for online sports betting sites offshore to accept American players.

Betting on sports is a reality that happens. The U.S. has limited it significantly, but still we see hundreds of millions of dollars wagered. The fact is betting on sports is hugely popular, and will always continue to be.
